For a man whose public life has been defined by power, politics, difficult decisions and years of uncertainty, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says there is one person who has remained a constant presence through it all — his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
As the First Lady turns 66, the President has used the occasion not merely to celebrate her birthday, but to reflect on the woman he says has shared both the triumphs and the burdens of their journey together.
In a deeply personal birthday message released on Monday morning, Tinubu described Oluremi as his “truest friend and confidante”, saying she has stood beside him through seasons when the future was anything but certain.
The message offered a glimpse into the private side of a relationship that has largely existed behind the public spotlight.
‘The burdens that were mine to bear’
Tinubu recalled the years they have spent together, describing his wife as a patient, courageous and honest partner who has never been afraid to tell him what he needs to hear.
He drew from a Yoruba proverb — “Ìyàwó rere ni adé ọkọ rẹ̀” — meaning that a good wife is her husband’s crown, while also referencing the biblical description of a virtuous woman.
According to the President, those descriptions have taken on personal meaning through his relationship with Remi.
“You have given these words true meaning in my life. You have stood by my side through every season,” he wrote.
Tinubu said the pressures he carried often became burdens shared by his wife, even when they were never publicly visible.
“The burdens that were mine to bear often found their way onto your shoulders. The thoughts I could not put into words somehow found their way to you,” he said.
He recalled moments when uncertainty surrounded their lives and decisions had to be made without guarantees.
“In difficult times, when the future was uncertain, you stayed calm beside me and prayed with me,” the President wrote.
For Tinubu, that companionship appears to have extended beyond conventional ideas of marriage. He described Remi as someone who could recognise when he needed counsel even before he asked for it.
‘You speak the truth plainly’
One of the most striking parts of the President’s message was his description of his wife as a confidante who tells him difficult truths.
“More often than not, you sense when I need counsel before I ask,” Tinubu said.
He recalled how, after demanding days, Remi would wait until they were alone before telling him what she believed he needed to hear.
“I call you my truest friend and confidante because you speak the truth plainly, even on the days I would rather not hear it,” he wrote.
It is a description that moves beyond the familiar public image of a political couple.
Behind the titles of President and First Lady, Tinubu portrayed their relationship as one in which private conversations, disagreement, prayer and companionship have helped carry them through the pressures of public life.
A home built around family and faith
The President also turned his attention to the family they have built together, crediting Remi with creating an environment shaped by faith, devotion and kindness.
He said their children and grandchildren had grown under the influence of her prayers and values.
“Our home bears the lasting imprint of your devotion. Our children and grandchildren have grown beneath the shelter of your prayers,” he said.
Beyond the family, Tinubu highlighted what he described as his wife’s commitment to helping vulnerable Nigerians.
He pointed to her work through the New Era Foundation during their years in Lagos and the Renewed Hope Initiative, which has focused on various groups, including young people, widows, elderly citizens and women farmers.
He also praised her advocacy for people affected by tuberculosis and other illnesses.
According to the President, Remi’s compassion has not been restricted by ethnic, regional or religious considerations.
“For you, compassion has never recognised the boundaries of tribe, region or religion,” he said.
‘If life returned me to the beginning…’
Perhaps the most intimate part of the birthday message came toward the end, when Tinubu reflected on the length of their journey together.
He recalled the difficult decisions they had discussed for hours, the sacrifices that remained unseen by the public and the moments when laughter and prayer helped them through challenging periods.
“A long journey teaches a man the true value of a good partner,” he wrote.
Tinubu said that if he had the opportunity to begin his life again, he would still choose the path that brought him to Remi.
“If life returned me to the beginning, I would choose the same road that led me to you,” he said.
It was a striking conclusion to a message that began as a birthday tribute but became, in many ways, a reflection on partnership — the kind that exists away from cameras, political speeches and public expectations.

Tinubu ended his message with a prayer for his wife, asking God to grant her many more years in good health and happiness.
He thanked her for the life they had built and the love he said had held it together.
“Happy 66th birthday, my darling Oluremi,” he wrote.
“I pray that God Almighty will grant you many more years in good health and joy.”
For a couple whose lives have travelled from Lagos politics to the highest office in Nigeria, Tinubu’s birthday tribute presented a different lens through which to view their journey.
Not through elections, appointments or political battles, but through the quieter things that often sustain a long partnership: honesty, prayer, sacrifice, companionship and the presence of someone who knows what to say — and when to say it.
