The International Human Rights Commission, IHRC, has released the names of 37 suspected illegal miners who reportedly died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Niger State.
The victims were among dozens of suspects arrested during anti-illegal mining operations conducted around the Lieutenant General Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna, the state capital, on September 15 and 16.
The organisation disclosed the identities of the deceased on Sunday through its International Peace Ambassador, Awaisu Giwa, who spoke with TheCable.
Giwa explained that the initial list was obtained from the records of the General Hospital, Minna, through the hospital’s mortuary attendant, acting on the instructions of the Chief Medical Director, CMD.
He added that four additional names were provided after relatives of missing persons approached the commission.
According to him, the IHRC intends to use the list to assist in efforts to secure compensation for the families of the deceased.
“We got the list from the CMD of the general hospital. It was written by the mortuary attendant for us, but we are going to the hospital tomorrow for the list to be on the official letterhead of the hospital,” Giwa said.
He explained that the hospital’s CMD had authorised the release of the names, adding that more families had begun contacting the commission to report missing relatives.
Giwa said the commission was working to verify the identities and obtain formal documentation from the hospital.
The release of the names comes amid investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the suspected miners in NSCDC custody.

The Federal Government had earlier suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Aniviye, and other officers in connection with the incident, pending the outcome of an independent investigation.

The IHRC stated that the final four names were not included in the initial list obtained from the General Hospital, Minna.
