Kano State has a new deputy governor following a major political shake-up.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has nominated Murtala Sule Garo to fill the vacant position after the resignation of Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The development comes after months of political friction within the state’s leadership.
The crisis began when Governor Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress, a move that deepened divisions between him and his deputy, who chose to remain in the NNPP.
Tensions escalated as Gwarzo resisted pressure to follow the governor into the APC.
With relations deteriorating, the Kano State House of Assembly reportedly initiated steps that could have led to his removal.
Before matters reached that stage, however, Gwarzo stepped down and later aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress.
Confirming the new nomination, the governor’s spokesperson, Mustapha Muhammad, said the decision was made after broad consultations with key stakeholders.
He added that the move complies with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers a governor to appoint a replacement when the deputy governor’s office becomes vacant.
The nomination has now been forwarded to the State Assembly for approval.
Garo, 48, brings extensive political and administrative experience to the role.
Over the years, he has served in multiple capacities, including as a party organising secretary, special adviser to the governor, and chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

He also previously headed the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano and served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
In the 2023 elections, he contested as a deputy governorship candidate under the APC.
