Nigeria’s political landscape witnessed another dramatic twist on Saturday as the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki officially affirmed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

But what should have been a straightforward political event quickly turned into a controversy involving allegations of intimidation, abuse of power and threats from one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.

At the centre of the storm is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

How A Presidential Endorsement Turned Into A Political Showdown

According to the PDP faction, plans were already in place to hold a national convention where Jonathan’s candidacy would be formally ratified.

However, party officials claimed events took an unexpected turn when the management of the event centre scheduled to host the convention allegedly contacted them with troubling news.

The party alleged that the venue operators withdrew from the arrangement after receiving pressure linked to the FCT administration.

What followed has now become one of the most controversial political claims emerging from opposition circles.

PDP Accuses Wike Of Using Power To Disrupt Convention

In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP faction alleged that Wike invited the management of the event centre and threatened severe consequences if the venue hosted the convention.

According to the statement, the venue operators were allegedly warned that their Certificate of Occupancy could be revoked and the facility demolished if the PDP gathering went ahead as planned.

The claim has sparked fresh debate about political tolerance, abuse of office and the shrinking space for opposition activities in Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, no official response had been issued by Wike regarding the allegations.

Security Concerns Force Last-Minute Change Of Venue

Faced with what it described as mounting pressure and security concerns, PDP leaders reportedly held an emergency meeting to determine their next move.

The party said it initially considered resisting what it viewed as an attempt to frustrate the convention.

However, after internal consultations, leaders decided against any confrontation and opted to move the event to another location.

The decision, according to party officials, was taken to avoid unnecessary tension and ensure the convention proceeded peacefully.

Jonathan Officially Receives Certificate Of Return

Despite the controversy, the convention eventually held at an alternative venue.

At the gathering, former President Goodluck Jonathan was formally ratified as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Party leaders subsequently presented him with a certificate of return, effectively confirming his position as the faction’s flagbearer.

The development signals Jonathan’s dramatic return to the centre of Nigeria’s political conversation years after leaving office.

PDP Raises Alarm Over Democracy

Following the convention, the party used the occasion to launch a strong attack on the FCT Minister and what it described as growing threats to democratic participation.

The PDP faction accused Wike of attempting to undermine opposition activities and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene.

According to the party, allowing such actions to continue could weaken democratic institutions and create dangerous precedents ahead of future elections.

The statement warned against any move capable of discouraging political competition or restricting the rights of opposition parties.

Jonathan’s Return Changes The Political Equation

Beyond the controversy surrounding the convention, Jonathan’s emergence could have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.

The former president remains one of the country’s most recognisable political figures.

His entry into the race immediately introduces new dynamics into an already crowded 2027 presidential contest.

Supporters view him as an experienced statesman capable of uniting different political interests.

Critics, however, may question whether Nigeria’s future lies in returning to familiar faces rather than embracing a new generation of leadership.

The 2027 Question

For now, the immediate controversy revolves around allegations of political intimidation and the circumstances surrounding the PDP convention.

But the larger story may be Jonathan’s unexpected return to presidential politics.

With political realignments intensifying, opposition parties searching for viable candidates and the battle for 2027 already taking shape, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Nigeria’s next presidential election may be far more dramatic, unpredictable and fiercely contested than many initially expected.
