Blogger Faces Cyberstalking Charges Over Alleged Defamatory Post Targeting Tony Elumelu

A Lagos Federal High Court has ordered the remand of a blogger accused of spreading damaging allegations about billionaire businessman and United Bank for Africa (UBA) Chairman, Tony Elumelu.

Blogger Faces Cyberstalking Charges Over Alleged Defamatory Post Targeting Tony Elumelu

The case, which is already generating attention across social media and legal circles, highlights the growing consequences of publishing unverified claims in Nigeria’s digital age.

The defendant, identified as Nwanorue John Surpruchi, was arraigned before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa on allegations ranging from cyberstalking to the dissemination of false information and defamation.

The Viral Claim At The Centre Of The Storm

According to court documents, the controversy stems from a social media post allegedly published through an X account identified as @PROBLEMCHLMKYI.

Prosecutors claimed the account circulated a sensational allegation suggesting that Elumelu had divorced his wife after DNA tests supposedly revealed that none of his seven children were biologically his.

The claim quickly spread across social media, attracting widespread attention and sparking intense reactions online.

Authorities, however, insist the publication was false and malicious.

Police Allege Post Reached Millions

During proceedings, the prosecution told the court that the controversial post gained massive visibility after being shared online.

According to the police, the publication generated approximately 1.9 million views, more than 1,600 reposts and thousands of engagements across social media platforms.

Investigators argued that the scale of the circulation amplified the alleged damage caused to Elumelu and members of his family.

The prosecution maintained that the post exposed them to ridicule, public embarrassment and reputational harm.

Elumelu’s Name Dragged Into Online Controversy

For years, Tony Elumelu has remained one of Africa’s most influential business figures, known for his banking empire, investments and philanthropy.

The emergence of such allegations involving his family instantly attracted attention, fueling speculation and online discussions before authorities stepped in.

The prosecution argues that the consequences of the publication extended beyond social media gossip and crossed into criminal territory under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.

Charges Filed Against The Blogger

The Inspector General of Police, through the Force Criminal Investigation Department (ForceCID) Annex in Alagbon, Ikoyi, brought a four-count charge against the defendant.

The charges include:

  • Conspiracy
  • Cyberstalking
  • Dissemination of false information
  • Defamation

Prosecutors said the alleged offences violate provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, as amended, as well as sections of the Criminal Code Act.

Defendant Pleads Not Guilty

When the charges were read before the court, Surpruchi pleaded not guilty to all allegations.

His legal team immediately sought bail, arguing that an application had already been filed and was undergoing processing.

However, prosecutors requested time to study and respond to the application before any decision could be made.

Court Orders Remand Pending Bail Hearing

Following arguments from both sides, Justice Lewis-Allagoa adjourned the case to June 19, 2026.

The court also ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service pending the hearing and determination of his bail application.

The decision means the blogger will remain in custody until the court considers whether he should be released on bail.

A Growing Warning For Social Media Users?

Beyond the courtroom drama, the case raises broader questions about accountability in the age of social media.

As online platforms continue to shape public conversations, authorities are increasingly moving against individuals accused of spreading false or defamatory content.

Supporters of stricter enforcement argue that reputations deserve protection from harmful misinformation.

Critics, however, continue to debate where the line should be drawn between free expression and criminal liability.

For now, the legal battle involving Tony Elumelu and the blogger accused of targeting him is set to become another major test case in Nigeria’s evolving relationship with social media, digital accountability and cybercrime enforcement.
