An All Progressives Congress (APC) member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Shittu, has urged Muslim voters to reject political parties that field Christian candidates for governor ahead of the 2027 election.
Shittu, who represents Saki West State Constituency, made the call while addressing voters at a recent gathering in Oyo State.
The lawmaker appealed to Muslim voters to support candidates who share their faith, alleging that electing a Christian governor would put Muslims at a disadvantage.
“We are appealing to you, our fathers, that you must stand with our candidates who are Muslims. Anyone who selects a Christian candidate for governor, let us reject them and not vote for them. If we vote for them, they will punish Muslims,” Shittu said.
He further called on Muslims to shun political parties that present Christian candidates for the governorship position.
His comments come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with the religious identity of potential successors to Governor Seyi Makinde becoming part of the political conversation in Oyo State.
The remarks have also drawn attention because of the state’s history of producing governors from both Muslim and Christian backgrounds. Recent discussions over the 2027 succession have included calls from some Muslim groups for a Muslim to emerge as Makinde’s successor.
Rufai Oseni Speaks on Tinubu, Wike-APC Governors Rift
Separately, Arise Television’s Morning Show anchor, Rufai Oseni, has weighed in on the ongoing disagreement between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and APC governors, arguing that President Bola Tinubu would be cautious about allowing the dispute to escalate ahead of the 2027 election.
Speaking on Monday’s edition of the programme, Oseni said Tinubu would likely seek a response that manages the disagreement rather than taking a position that could worsen relations with Wike.
“You see, I know this country too well. President Tinubu will never rock the boat. He will just try to give a gloomier response to settle the matter between Wike and the governors because he wants to win an election,” Oseni said.
According to the broadcaster, the dispute involving Wike could have implications beyond the 2027 election, particularly concerning the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Oseni also argued that Wike’s current political activities could be connected to longer-term presidential ambitions, although that remains his political assessment rather than an established fact.

He said the more significant contest involving Wike could emerge after the 2027 polls, when questions surrounding the future direction of the PDP are likely to come into sharper focus.
