NYSC Threatens To Blacklist Employers Who Fail To Provide Accommodation, Transport For Corps Members

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has warned that organisations failing to provide adequate welfare for corps members posted to them risk being barred from participating in the scheme.

Speaking during an interactive session with corps members in Lokoja, Kogi State, Nafiu said employers who refuse to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members would be blacklisted from receiving NYSC postings in the future.

He stressed that corps members deserve a conducive environment to carry out their national assignment, urging all employers to prioritise their welfare.

The NYSC boss also reassured corps members of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the service year. He appealed to state governments, local government authorities and other stakeholders to strengthen their support for the scheme by providing better welfare and security for serving corps members.

Security Reminder

Nafiu reminded corps members that security remains a collective responsibility, urging them to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to relevant security agencies.

He further advised them to uphold the core values of discipline, integrity and dedication, warning against involvement in misconduct that could tarnish the image of the NYSC.

“You are ambassadors of your families, your institutions and the NYSC. Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of that responsibility,” he said.

The Director-General also encouraged corps members to take advantage of the post-camp Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a valuable platform for acquiring practical skills that could create long-term economic opportunities.

According to him, corps members should identify business opportunities within their host communities and begin earning legitimate income even before the completion of their service year.

“Be proactive, identify business opportunities within your host communities and start making some money for yourselves even now,” Nafiu advised.

He also urged them to cultivate a healthy savings culture despite the country’s current economic realities, noting that prudent financial management would prepare them for life after national service.

“Take your service year as a training ground for future financial management by managing your finances wisely,” he added.

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Kogi State, Mrs Tochi Chika Chris-Moneke, appreciated the Director-General for visiting the state, describing the visit as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare and security of corps members and staff.

She disclosed that the state secretariat was making preparations to organise a corps employers’ workshop as well as the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme in the coming weeks to further strengthen service delivery and community development efforts.
