As millions of Muslims prepare for one of Islam’s most important celebrations, the Federal Government has announced a two-day public holiday for Nigerians to observe Eid-el-Kabir.

But beyond the celebration, authorities are also sounding a note of caution.
FG Announces Public Holidays For Eid-el-Kabir
The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, in Abuja.
According to the government, the declaration reflects respect for the religious values and spiritual traditions observed by millions of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.
Eid-el-Kabir Is More Than A Celebration, FG Says
Congratulating Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the diaspora, Tunji-Ojo described Eid-el-Kabir as more than a festive occasion.
He said the celebration symbolises sacrifice, obedience to God, faith, and compassion toward others.
The minister also encouraged Nigerians to use the period for reflection and prayer.
According to him, moments like this create opportunities for citizens to seek divine direction for the nation as it continues efforts toward peace, security, and economic progress.
Call For Unity And National Reflection
The Federal Government further urged citizens to embrace values of coexistence and shared responsibility.
In its message, the government emphasised that national growth requires unity, understanding, and collective hope.
Officials wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyful celebration.
Security Tightened Across North-East Ahead Of Festivities
While preparations continue nationwide, security agencies say they are not taking chances.
Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, announced that extensive security measures have been activated across the region ahead of the holiday.
According to a statement issued by Media Information Officer Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the arrangements are designed to protect residents and maintain calm throughout the celebrations.
Intelligence Suggests Possible Threats
The command disclosed that security intelligence indicates remnants linked to extremist groups may attempt isolated attacks during the festive period.
The groups mentioned include Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.
Authorities, however, assured residents that proactive steps have already been implemented to strengthen monitoring and response capacity.
Celebration Meets Caution
For many Nigerians, Eid-el-Kabir remains a time for worship, family gatherings, and gratitude.
