Detained Nigerian Soldier Dies After Denial of Medical Care in Army Custody

Fresh allegations have surfaced surrounding the death of a detained Nigerian soldier, Corporal Bala Hudu, with claims that prolonged neglect and poor conditions inside a military detention facility contributed to his passing.

Detained Nigerian Soldier Dies After Denial of Medical Care in Army Custody

Hudu, identified by service number 09/6/44/4682, served with the 223 Light Tank Battalion under the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army.

Reports indicate that he had remained in military detention since October 2023 following an incident reportedly linked to an act described by sources as “self-defence.”

According to accounts obtained from individuals familiar with the situation, the corporal’s health reportedly began to deteriorate in early April 2026 while he was still being held in custody.

Sources alleged that on April 4, Hudu and several other detained soldiers sought treatment at a military medical centre after falling ill.

However, they claimed medical personnel refused to examine them, accusing the detainees of pretending to be sick.

One detainee alleged that despite visible signs of illness, the soldiers were returned to the guardroom without receiving treatment.

As the days passed, Hudu’s condition reportedly worsened. Sources claimed repeated appeals for medical attention were ignored, even after he allegedly attempted to purchase medication through military police personnel using his own money.

According to the accounts, the request was denied on the grounds that it amounted to self-medication.

By April 12, fellow detainees reportedly noticed a severe decline in Hudu’s health, saying he was experiencing persistent vomiting and diarrhoea.

They alleged that urgent intervention still did not come until several days later, after detainees protested and pressured authorities to act.

It was not until April 16 that Hudu was reportedly taken to a hospital for treatment.

However, sources said news later filtered back that the soldier had died. His death was confirmed the following day, April 17, 2026.

Another Soldier Allegedly Facing Health Crisis in Detention

In a related development, concerns have also emerged over the condition of another detained soldier, Private Solomon Gideon, service number 15NA/73/1093, attached to the 26 Battalion under Headquarters 8 Division.

Sources claimed Gideon’s health has significantly deteriorated while in detention and alleged that he is now close to losing his sight.

The soldier had reportedly earlier faced disciplinary action involving the forfeiture of two years’ salary over what insiders described as a “miscellaneous offence.”

However, sources alleged that some senior officers considered the punishment insufficient and ordered that he face another disciplinary process.

Growing Questions Over Military Detention Practices

The incidents have sparked renewed concerns about the welfare of detained personnel within the Nigerian Army and the handling of internal disciplinary procedures.

Critics and insiders have alleged that detention processes within the military often lack transparency, with fears that disciplinary systems may sometimes be used in ways that expose junior personnel to harsh or disproportionate treatment.
