In a statement released on May 1 through his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President commended workers across the country for their resilience and patriotism, noting that their daily efforts continue to sustain Nigeria despite ongoing economic and workplace challenges.

Akpabio, who leads the National Assembly of Nigeria, said the occasion was an opportunity to recognise the immense contributions of workers from all sectors.

He highlighted the roles of teachers, farmers, healthcare professionals, artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees, stressing that their collective efforts drive national development.

According to him, these groups remain central to Nigeria’s growth, as they shape the future, provide essential services, and keep the economy functioning.

Senate Promises Stronger Support for Workers

Addressing the realities faced by workers, Akpabio acknowledged the strain caused by rising living costs and demanding work environments.

He assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly of Nigeria is committed to addressing these issues through impactful legislation.

He stated that lawmakers are focused on policies that will improve wages, ensure safer working conditions, reform pension systems, and create more employment opportunities.

He added that recent measures, including updates to the national minimum wage framework, reflect a broader commitment to enhancing workers’ welfare.

Akpabio also urged employers—both in government and the private sector—to place greater emphasis on employee wellbeing.

He noted that a productive economy depends heavily on a motivated and fairly treated workforce.

Call for Partnership and Continued Reform

The Senate President further emphasised the importance of collaboration between government institutions, employers, and labour unions.

He praised organised labour for its ongoing cooperation and reaffirmed the Senate’s readiness to strengthen that partnership in pursuit of better outcomes for workers.

He stressed that employees should not be viewed merely as tools of production but as key stakeholders in Nigeria’s progress.

Reiterating his message of solidarity, Akpabio assured Nigerian workers that the Senate remains committed to reforms that will promote dignity, stability, and hope within the labour force.
