Okonkwo confirmed the appointment in a statement shared via his verified 𝕏 account in the early hours of Thursday, expressing gratitude to the former Vice President for the confidence reposed in him.

The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly expressed reservations over Atiku’s choice of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate, arguing that the decision sidelined the South-East in the party’s presidential ticket.

South-East Concerns Addressed

Explaining his decision to accept the role, Okonkwo disclosed that his concerns had since been addressed following consultations with Atiku and key leaders of the ADC.

According to him, discussions held within the party provided assurances that the interests of the South-East had been adequately considered, despite the constraints imposed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and prevailing political realities.

He described his appointment as evidence of Atiku’s willingness to embrace dialogue and constructive engagement rather than react negatively to differing opinions within his political camp.

“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo wrote.

He added that the former Vice President’s leadership style encourages dialogue and compromise whenever disagreements arise.

“Rather than take offence against associates who express genuine reservations about decisions taken, His Excellency always chooses dialogue and compromise that lead to solutions,” he stated.

Appreciation to Party Leaders

Okonkwo also acknowledged several individuals whom he credited for facilitating reconciliation within the party and strengthening the coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

He expressed appreciation to Dr. Kashim Imam for his intervention and counsel, describing him as a strong advocate for an inclusive political process that accommodates Nigerians regardless of ethnicity, religion or region.

The newly appointed spokesperson also thanked former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu for his sacrifices in consolidating the party despite challenges encountered since the coalition was formed.

He further commended Dr. Ekene Onwuka, Senior Special Assistant to Atiku on Special Duties, for his efforts in assembling what he described as a formidable campaign team.

Okonkwo concluded by thanking his family, supporters and well-wishers for their encouragement and prayers, while seeking continued support as he assumes his new responsibility.

He pledged to work towards what he described as the emergence of “a glorious and greater Nigeria” under an Atiku administration in 2027.
