Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the tragedy as heartbreaking, saying the loss had left the nation grieving.
Australian aviation company McDermott Aviation, which leased the helicopters for Greece’s firefighting operations, also expressed condolences while pledging full cooperation with investigators.
The Survivors
The surviving British pilot and his Greek colleague escaped with minor injuries.
Officials say both remained conscious after landing.
From the ground, they immediately alerted emergency services and helped direct rescuers to the crash site.
Without that quick response, recovery operations might have taken far longer.
Both remain under medical observation.
