The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains the only political party effectively challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Wike made the remarks on Monday in Abuja during a project commissioning event held shortly after the Ekiti State governorship election and by-elections conducted in several parts of the country.

Speaking at the event, which was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima—representing President Bola Tinubu—Wike congratulated the APC on its electoral successes while also acknowledging the PDP’s position as the main opposition party.
He said political competition is a normal part of democracy, noting that every system must have both a ruling party and a credible opposition.

“In every political setting, there must be winners and there must be opposition. Today, we have seen the ruling party and the opposition party,” he said.
“Opposition Is About Action, Not Noise” — Wike
Wike emphasised that opposition politics goes beyond rhetoric, insisting that only the PDP has shown the capacity to actively challenge the APC.
“Opposition is not about talking; it is about challenging the ruling party. And we are the only party doing that, so we remain the leading opposition party,” he stated.
His comments come amid ongoing political realignments and debates over the strength and relevance of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
