What should have been another normal school day for hundreds of students in Akoko Edo turned into an unexpected journey home after the Edo State Government ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools over emerging security concerns.

The decision, announced on Wednesday, has sparked anxiety among parents, teachers, and residents who are now hoping authorities can quickly address the threat and restore normalcy.
The affected institutions are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School, all located in Akoko Edo Local Government Area.
According to the state government, the shutdown is not a holiday but a precautionary measure aimed at protecting lives.
Government Pulls the Safety Lever
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, authorities said the closure was necessary to safeguard students, teachers, and other school personnel.
As a result, all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended indefinitely.
For many parents, the announcement came as a relief mixed with uncertainty.
On one hand, the government is taking proactive steps to prevent potential danger. On the other, many families are left wondering how long the disruption will last and what exactly prompted such an urgent decision.
What is clear, however, is that state authorities are choosing caution over regret.
WASSCE Candidates Won’t Be Left Behind
Despite the closure, students currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will still be allowed to sit for their papers.
The government said special security arrangements have been put in place to ensure candidates can safely access their examination centres.
School administrators, security agencies, and community leaders are expected to work together to coordinate the movement and protection of students during the examination period.
For final-year students already battling examination pressure, the development adds another layer of tension to an already challenging period.
Schools Ordered to Secure Facilities
The government has directed principals of the affected schools to ensure the safe and orderly release of students to their parents and guardians.
Beyond that, school authorities have also been instructed to secure classrooms, offices, equipment, and other school property throughout the closure period.

Officials are expected to maintain constant communication with the Ministry of Education, the Chief Inspector of Education, and relevant security agencies as the situation evolves.
Parents Urged to Remain Calm
While concerns continue to grow within the affected communities, the Edo State Government has appealed to residents not to panic.
Parents, guardians, and community members have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies working to maintain peace and public safety.
Authorities insist that efforts are already underway to address the situation and ensure that students can safely return to school as soon as possible.
For now, however, the classrooms remain empty, the school bells are silent, and education has temporarily taken a back seat to security.
In a country where safety concerns increasingly shape decisions around learning, the closure serves as another reminder that protecting students remains just as important as educating them.
