Fresh details have emerged on the security operation that brought freedom to dozens of pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oyo State, revealing how weeks of intelligence gathering, strategic pressure and a controversial breakthrough involving the families of the suspected abductors helped change the course of the rescue mission.

The victims, 39 pupils and seven teachers from Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota and Alawusa communities in Oriire Local Government Area, had spent nearly two months in captivity after armed men stormed their communities on May 15, 2026.
While one of the teachers reportedly lost his life during the ordeal, the remaining hostages regained their freedom on July 10 after a coordinated operation by the military and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Inside The Intelligence Operation
According to security sources familiar with the operation, the rescue was not the result of a single military assault but the culmination of weeks of painstaking intelligence work.
Operatives reportedly tracked the movement and network of the kidnappers while tightening surveillance around their hideout inside the National Park forest.
The investigation eventually led security agencies to several relatives of the suspected kidnappers, including some of their wives and children, who were allegedly located in different parts of the country and taken into custody as investigators sought crucial intelligence.
Sources disclosed that the operation was coordinated by a senior DSS official, with security agencies simultaneously blocking potential escape routes around the forest to limit the kidnappers’ movements.
The detained women were later moved to Abuja, where investigators questioned them as part of efforts to gather information that could help secure the release of the hostages.
Videos Allegedly Shifted The Balance
Security insiders claimed the breakthrough came after recordings from the interrogations allegedly reached the kidnappers.
Although the circumstances surrounding the circulation of the videos remain unclear, the sources said the development significantly altered the behaviour of the abductors.
According to them, the kidnappers, who had previously cut off communication after making ransom demands, suddenly became more accessible and began maintaining regular contact with negotiators.
The sources said the change suggested that concern over the fate of their own families had begun influencing their decisions.
Kidnappers Proposed Prisoner Swap
As communication improved, the abductors reportedly floated a proposal.
According to the security sources, they suggested releasing the pupils and teachers in exchange for the freedom of their detained wives, while also requesting assurances that they would not be arrested if they released the captives.

The proposal, however, was rejected.
Security agencies reportedly insisted that there would be no negotiation involving the exchange of detainees and maintained that the hostages had to be released unconditionally.
Officials allegedly warned the abductors that their options were limited to surrendering peacefully or facing possible military action.
Pressure Mounted Before Rescue
Even as discussions continued, security forces reportedly intensified operations around the forest.
Investigators believed the detention of the suspects’ relatives reduced the chances of the captives being harmed, as the kidnappers became increasingly cautious about the welfare of their own families.
With surveillance tightened and security operatives steadily closing in on the hideout, pressure mounted on the abductors until the remaining victims were eventually freed.
The rescued pupils and teachers have since been reunited with government officials and are currently receiving medical attention and psychosocial care to aid their recovery after spending more than 50 days in captivity.
