As conflict and uncertainty continue to grip the Middle East, the United States has taken another significant step that could reshape the region’s security landscape.
Washington has approved a proposed $1.96 billion arms package for Saudi Arabia, a move officials say is designed to strengthen the kingdom’s ability to defend itself against growing threats. The decision comes at a time when regional tensions are rising, particularly following recent confrontations involving Yemen’s Houthi rebels and the broader standoff between the United States and Iran.
The approval signals America’s continued commitment to one of its closest allies in the Gulf while also highlighting the increasingly fragile security situation across the region.
US backs Saudi Arabia with advanced weapons package
The proposed sale was announced on Wednesday by the US State Department, which described Saudi Arabia as a key strategic partner whose security remains important to regional stability.
According to the department, the deal supports Washington’s broader foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the defence capabilities of one of America’s major non-NATO allies.
In its statement, the State Department said strengthening Saudi Arabia’s military would contribute to political stability and economic progress throughout the Gulf region.
Officials also stressed that the transaction would not reduce the operational readiness of the United States military.
What Saudi Arabia is getting
The proposed package includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) alongside related warheads.
According to the US Navy, the APKWS is designed to provide a relatively low-cost precision weapon capable of striking targets accurately while reducing collateral damage during combat operations.
The contract is expected to be handled by BAE Systems, with the defence company serving as the principal contractor for the weapons package.
US officials believe the equipment will significantly improve Saudi Arabia’s ability to defend its territory against both current and emerging threats while also improving coordination with American and allied forces operating in the region.
Why the timing matters
The announcement comes as Saudi Arabia faces renewed security concerns.
Tensions have escalated following a reported missile strike on Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia earlier this week.
The attack reportedly occurred after Yemeni government forces targeted Sanaa International Airport in an operation aimed at diverting a flight carrying a Houthi delegation returning from the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader.
