Fresh tensions in South Africa have turned deadly, with two Nigerian nationals reportedly killed in separate incidents linked to rising anti-foreigner sentiment, triggering alarm within the diaspora and calls for swift diplomatic action.

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg confirmed the deaths of Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, describing the circumstances as deeply troubling.
According to the Consul-General, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, Emmanuel succumbed to injuries allegedly inflicted during an assault by members of the South African National Defence Force on April 20.
In a separate case, Andrew was detained a day earlier in Pretoria after an encounter with officers from the Tshwane Metro Police. His body was later discovered in a mortuary under unclear circumstances.
Due Process Must Be Followed
The Consulate noted that both incidents have shaken the Nigerian community and diplomatic circles, prompting the filing of formal complaints with the South African Police Service.
Okey-Uche urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, stressing that justice must be served.
She emphasised that regardless of any allegations, due process must always be followed, warning against unlawful actions by security personnel or civilians.
Amid the growing unease, Nigerians living in South Africa have appealed to their government to take stronger measures to safeguard citizens abroad, describing such protection as both a constitutional duty and a moral obligation.
The Consulate also cautioned against the stigmatization of Nigerians, urging citizens to remain calm and abide by local laws despite the tense atmosphere.
A Broader Attack
Recent developments suggest a broader wave of hostility toward foreign nationals. Videos circulating online show instances of harassment and threats.
In one widely shared clip, a Nigerian trader was confronted during a protest and ordered to leave the area, despite explaining that he had lived there for years to support his family.
In another disturbing case, CCTV footage appeared to show an Ethiopian national being fatally shot in Johannesburg in what observers suspect may have been a targeted attack.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into these incidents are ongoing, though no arrests have been announced so far.

South African police have condemned the acts, stating that such behavior undermines the country’s commitment to human rights, dignity, and equality.
