Troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA have rescued Amina Abubakar, the wife of the late retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, after a violent encounter with armed bandits in Katsina State.

The dramatic rescue followed a fierce exchange of fire during a search-and-rescue mission in Matazu Local Government Area, where the retired senior officer and members of his family were earlier abducted.

The operation, carried out under Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, has intensified military pressure on bandit hideouts in the North-West following the high-profile abduction and reported death of the former general in captivity.

Intelligence-Led Operation Turns Violent in Matazu

Military sources said troops acted on credible intelligence that led them into coordinated movements across Matazu and surrounding communities, targeting known escape routes and suspected bandit enclaves.

What began as a search mission quickly escalated into a gun battle when soldiers closed in on the abductors around Tunga village.

According to security insiders who spoke with Zagazola Makama, the bandits were caught off guard but responded with gunfire before attempting to flee.

It was during this chaotic exchange that the kidnappers reportedly abandoned their captive.

A military source confirmed that the bandits shot Amina Abubakar before escaping into nearby bush paths as troops advanced.

“The bandits shot her and fled when we made contact at Tunga village. We have rescued Mrs Abubakar. She is bleeding; we have given her first aid and are moving her for urgent medical attention,” the source said.

Aftermath of a Tragedy That Shook the Military

The rescue comes against the backdrop of deep national concern following reports that retired Major General Abubakar Rabe died while still in captivity, a development that triggered anger and renewed criticism of Nigeria’s handling of banditry in the North-West.

For many observers, the incident has once again exposed the growing boldness of armed groups operating in the region, despite repeated military offensives.

Military Intensifies Crackdown on Bandit Networks

Security sources say follow-up operations are already underway, with troops sustaining pressure on fleeing suspects and identified kingpins believed to be responsible for the kidnapping network.

Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, according to officials, will continue across affected communities until all known hideouts are dismantled.

The Armed Forces have also reiterated their commitment to tracking down those behind the attack and ensuring they face justice, as operations in Katsina and neighbouring states intensify.

For residents of Matazu and surrounding areas, however, the rescue brings both relief and lingering fear — a reminder that in many rural communities, the line between survival and tragedy remains dangerously thin.
