‘Top Boy’ Star Micheal Ward Cleared Of Rape, Sexual Assault Charges After London Trial

British actor Micheal Ward, best known for his breakout role as Jamie Tovell in Netflix’s hit crime series Top Boy, has been found not guilty of rape and sexual assault after a closely watched trial in London.

'Top Boy' Star Micheal Ward Cleared Of Rape, Sexual Assault Charges After London Trial

The 28-year-old actor was acquitted of all charges on Friday after a 10-day hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, bringing an end to a legal battle that had cast a shadow over his career for more than three years.

As the jury delivered unanimous not-guilty verdicts on all five counts, Ward became visibly emotional inside the courtroom.

Jury Rejects All Allegations

Ward had faced two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault over allegations linked to an encounter with a woman following New Year’s Day celebrations in east London in January 2023.

According to prosecutors, Ward met the complainant at a party in Ilford before both later attended another gathering in Stratford.

The prosecution alleged that the actor invited the woman into the back seat of a Mercedes, where she claimed she was sexually assaulted despite repeatedly indicating that she wanted to leave.

The complainant, whose identity remains legally protected, told the court she delayed reporting the incident because she initially blamed herself and felt intimidated by Ward’s public profile.

Prosecutors argued that the actor ignored her lack of consent during the encounter.

Ward Maintained The Encounter Was Consensual

Throughout the investigation and trial, Ward firmly denied all allegations.

Giving evidence before the court, he insisted the interaction between him and the woman was entirely consensual, describing their behaviour throughout the evening as friendly and mutually affectionate.

“It was what we both wanted. There was mutual interest,” Ward told jurors.

He rejected suggestions that he had forced himself on the complainant or ignored her wishes, maintaining that both parties willingly participated in the encounter.

His legal team also questioned aspects of the prosecution’s case, including forensic evidence presented during the trial.

Among the issues raised was the absence of blood on the complainant’s clothing, despite her testimony that she believed there had been blood on her leggings and underwear after the incident.

Following days of testimony from both sides, the jury unanimously accepted the defence’s case and cleared Ward of every charge.

Top Boy Co-Star Speaks In His Defence

One of the most notable moments during the trial came when Top Boy actress Jasmine Jobson appeared as a defence witness.

Jobson, who portrayed Jaq in the acclaimed Netflix series, described Ward as one of her closest friends and spoke warmly about his character.

Calling him “my brother, a beautiful soul and a kind-hearted man,” she told the court the allegations had taken a devastating toll on his personal life and acting career.

According to her, the prolonged legal proceedings effectively brought Ward’s career to a standstill while he awaited the outcome of the case.

Ward’s defence lawyer echoed those sentiments, telling the court the actor was eager to return to work after years of uncertainty.

Court Also Investigated Social Media Interference

The trial briefly faced disruption after an online content creator posted comments about evidence while proceedings were still ongoing.

The presiding judge ordered the removal of the posts and temporarily restricted parts of the hearing while ensuring jurors had not been exposed to the online content.

After satisfying itself that the integrity of the trial had not been compromised, the court resumed proceedings.

A Career Set For A Fresh Start

Ward rose to prominence after starring as Marco in the 2019 British crime drama Blue Story, before achieving international recognition for his award-winning portrayal of Jamie in Top Boy.

His performance earned him the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2020 and opened doors to major productions, including Small Axe, Empire of Light, The Book of Clarence, and Eddington.

With the criminal proceedings now behind him, the Jamaican-born British actor is expected to focus on rebuilding his acting career after more than three years of legal uncertainty.
