Tinubu Set to Return to UN General Assembly, Eyes Global Talks on Security, Economy and Investment

After missing the last two editions of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is preparing to return to the world’s biggest diplomatic stage.

This September, the Nigerian leader is expected to travel to New York, United States, where he will personally lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)—a gathering that brings together presidents, prime ministers and world leaders to discuss the biggest challenges confronting the globe.

Beyond delivering Nigeria’s official address, Tinubu’s participation is expected to open doors for high-level meetings, investment discussions and conversations on regional security that could shape the country’s foreign policy in the coming years.

Tinubu Confirms Attendance at UNGA 2026

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed the development on Wednesday.

This was after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Speaking with State House correspondents, Ibrahim confirmed that the President had given his assurance that he would personally attend this year’s General Assembly.

“The President was able to give us his word. Now he will come to UNGA this September,” Ibrahim said.

The envoy explained that the meeting with the President also focused on preparations for Nigeria’s participation, including the proposed budget for the country’s delegation.

Why This Year’s UN Meeting Matters

For Nigeria, the annual UN gathering is much more than another international conference.

It provides an opportunity for President Tinubu to present his administration’s economic reforms, engage foreign investors and strengthen diplomatic relationships at a time when Nigeria is seeking greater international support for its economic and security priorities.

According to Ibrahim, Tinubu is expected to participate in several high-level meetings.

These meetings are outside the General Assembly, where discussions will focus on critical sectors including:

  • Energy
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Hospital management
  • Economic cooperation

The meetings are also expected to showcase Nigeria’s reform agenda before world leaders and development partners.

A Return After Two Years Away

Tinubu personally attended the 78th UN General Assembly shortly after assuming office in 2023.

However, he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at both the 79th and 80th sessions.

His return this year is expected to give Nigeria a stronger presence during one of the world’s most important diplomatic events.

It will also allow the President to interact directly with heads of state, multinational organisations and international investors.

Border Security to Top Nigeria’s Agenda

One issue expected to feature prominently during Tinubu’s engagements is the growing insecurity across West Africa.

According to Ambassador Ibrahim, Nigeria intends to seek stronger international support for improved border policing across the region.

He noted that weak border controls have made it easier for terrorists, arms traffickers and organised criminal networks to move freely across several West African countries.

The Federal Government is already working with the United Nations on regional security initiatives, but Nigeria hopes to secure broader international cooperation during this year’s assembly.

According to the envoy, discussions will focus on:

  • Improving border surveillance
  • Intelligence sharing
  • Regional security cooperation
  • Combating terrorism and transnational crime

“So, border policing will be fine. These are the kind of things that the UN is established for,” Ibrahim stated.

Could Tinubu Meet Donald Trump?

One of the biggest talking points ahead of this year’s General Assembly is the possibility of a meeting between President Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump.

Although Ambassador Ibrahim acknowledged the possibility, he stopped short of confirming whether an official bilateral meeting had already been scheduled.

If such a meeting eventually takes place, it would be among the most closely watched diplomatic engagements involving Nigeria during the Assembly.

Nigeria’s Address to the World

According to Ibrahim, President Tinubu is expected to sit in the front row during the General Debate before delivering Nigeria’s national statement at approximately 10:45 a.m. New York time.

The address is expected to outline Nigeria’s position on several pressing global issues, including:

  • International peace and security
  • Economic development
  • Climate change
  • Reform of global institutions
  • Sustainable development

The speech is also expected to highlight the Federal Government’s domestic reforms and Nigeria’s role in promoting stability across Africa.

World Leaders Head to New York

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly officially opens on September 8, 2026, while the General Debate will run from September 22 to September 28.

The annual gathering will attract presidents, prime ministers, ministers, diplomats and representatives of international organisations from across the world.

Key issues expected to dominate discussions include global security, humanitarian crises, climate action, economic cooperation and sustainable development.

For Nigeria, Tinubu’s return to the UN podium represents more than a diplomatic appearance.

It is an opportunity to strengthen international partnerships, attract investment.

Beyond that,  it also gives the opportunity to advance regional security initiatives and project the country’s priorities before the global community.
