FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing mounting political pressure after more than 70 members of the European Parliament called for an investigation into his conduct following the controversial reversal of Folarin Balogun’s suspension during the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The lawmakers are demanding answers over whether football’s global governing body compromised its long-standing principle of political neutrality after United States President Donald Trump admitted personally intervening in the disciplinary case.
The controversy began after Balogun was shown a straight red card during the United States’ group-stage victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, an offence that automatically ruled him out of the Americans’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
However, in a dramatic twist, FIFA overturned the one-match suspension before the knockout fixture, allowing the striker to feature against Belgium.
The decision immediately sparked widespread criticism, particularly after President Trump publicly disclosed that he had contacted Infantino to request a review of the disciplinary sanction.
Trump, who has maintained a close relationship with the FIFA president over the years, described Balogun’s dismissal as “a great injustice” and confirmed that he personally appealed to Infantino to reconsider the punishment.
Questions From Parliament
The revelation ignited concerns across Europe, with dozens of Members of the European Parliament questioning whether FIFA had allowed political influence to shape a disciplinary decision.
Although Belgium formally protested the ruling before kickoff, FIFA dismissed the complaint and allowed Balogun to play.
In the end, the controversy had little impact on the sporting outcome as Belgium comfortably defeated the tournament co-hosts 4-1 to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Even after the United States’ elimination, criticism of FIFA has refused to subside.
European lawmakers are now urging an independent investigation into Infantino’s handling of the matter, arguing that the integrity of football’s disciplinary system must be protected from any perception of political interference.
Responding to the growing backlash, Infantino denied that external pressure played any role in the decision, insisting that FIFA’s judicial process remains completely independent.
Discussion With Trump
According to him, while he acknowledged discussing the matter with President Trump, he made it clear that the case was already before FIFA’s disciplinary bodies and would be determined strictly in accordance with the organisation’s rules.
He maintained that FIFA’s judicial panels operate autonomously, apply the provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and reach decisions based solely on the facts and applicable regulations.
Infantino further stressed that preserving the independence of FIFA’s disciplinary system remains a principle he intends to uphold regardless of external pressure or political interest.
The latest controversy has once again placed FIFA’s governance under intense international scrutiny, with fresh questions being raised about the organisation’s ability to remain impartial in politically sensitive matters.
