Planning To Study Law? See The 122 Universities CLE Says Are Approved

For many Nigerian students, gaining admission to study Law is more than just securing a university offer. It is often the beginning of a long-awaited journey towards becoming a lawyer.

But imagine spending four or five years paying school fees, buying textbooks, writing examinations and surviving the demands of an LL.B programme, only to discover at graduation that your degree cannot take you to the Nigerian Law School.

Planning To Study Law? See The 122 Universities CLE Says Are Approved

That is the situation the Council of Legal Education (CLE) is warning prospective law students and their parents to avoid.

The Council has released a list of universities authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme, while warning Nigerians against enrolling in institutions that do not have the necessary approval to offer Law.

In a public notice dated August 14, 2026, and released on Monday, the Council said only universities accredited by it can legally admit students into an LL.B programme in Nigeria.

The notice was signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho.

CLE: Don’t Fall For An Admission Offer That Can Lead Nowhere

The warning is particularly important for students currently shopping for university admission.

An admission letter can look official. A university may have a campus, a website, lecturers and even advertise a Law programme. But according to the CLE, that does not automatically mean the institution has the authority to train students for the Nigerian legal profession.

The Council made it clear that students who enrol in Law programmes that have not been accredited by it could ultimately be shut out of the next stage of their professional journey.

“Only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria,” the Council stated.

It added that students admitted into Law programmes in unaccredited universities would not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

That could mean years of study, tuition and personal sacrifice without the professional pathway the student expected.

Why The Warning Matters

Studying Law in Nigeria does not end with obtaining an LL.B degree.

After university, graduates who intend to practise as lawyers must proceed through the required professional training at the Nigerian Law School and satisfy the relevant requirements for qualification.

This is why the CLE is urging students to verify the status of a university before accepting an admission offer, rather than discovering a problem several years later.

The Council said the list released to the public represents the status of approved universities as of August 2026 and may be updated whenever necessary in line with its statutory responsibility for regulating legal education.

Some Universities Are Under Admission Moratorium

There is another detail prospective students need to pay close attention to.

Being named on the Council’s list does not necessarily mean that a university can admit new Law students in every academic session.

The CLE said some institutions are currently subject to moratoriums on admission into their LL.B programmes.

For instance, Baze University, Abuja, is listed under a three-year admission moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 sessions.

Lead City University, Ibadan, is listed under a five-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2027/2028 sessions.

The Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, is also listed under a two-year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 sessions.

The distinction is important: prospective students should not simply see a university’s name on an approval list and assume that fresh admission into Law is automatically available.

One Warning Every Prospective Law Student Should Take Seriously

For a young Nigerian who has spent months preparing for UTME, choosing a university and chasing admission, the excitement of seeing “Congratulations, you have been offered admission to study Law” can easily overshadow the need to ask one critical question: Is this Law programme approved by the Council of Legal Education?

The CLE’s latest notice makes clear that prospective students should not make decisions based solely on a university’s reputation, advertisements or admission offers.

Before paying acceptance fees or committing years of study to an LL.B programme, students and parents should verify the institution’s current accreditation and admission status.

Because in Law, the wrong admission today can become a very expensive problem several years later.
