Peter Obi Reveals Why He Chose a One-Bedroom Apartment Over His Mansion

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has offered a rare glimpse into his private lifestyle, revealing that he prefers living in a simple one-bedroom apartment despite owning a sprawling family residence in Onitsha.

Speaking during an interview and tour of his home organised by Advocacy For Good Governance, Obi explained that the arrangement stemmed from a long-standing difference in opinion between him and his wife, Margaret, over the kind of house they should build.

According to the former governor, he had initially favoured a modest and functional home, while his wife envisioned a much larger family residence. Rather than continue the debate, the couple reached a compromise that allowed both preferences to coexist under the same property.

Obi disclosed that a self-contained section consisting of a bedroom and sitting area was specifically designed for him, while the larger building was constructed to suit the family’s broader needs.

The former presidential hopeful noted that the apartment remains his preferred living space, describing it as sufficient for his daily needs and personal belongings.

He further explained that although the main residence belongs to the family, he rarely uses it unless his wife is around. According to him, whenever she is away, he remains in his private apartment and sees no reason to occupy the larger house.

The revelation has once again drawn attention to Obi’s reputation for maintaining a frugal lifestyle, a trait that has often featured prominently in discussions about his approach to leadership and public service.
