Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained the reason behind his legal action against his former political associate and ex-campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo.

Obi said the lawsuit was not an attempt to silence criticism or discourage free speech but a move to ensure that serious allegations made in public are either substantiated with evidence or withdrawn.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the former Labour Party presidential candidate stressed that individuals, especially public figures, should be held accountable for claims capable of damaging another person’s reputation.
According to Obi, making allegations without presenting proof undermines public discourse and unfairly tarnishes the image of those being accused.
He argued that anyone who claims to possess damaging or confidential information about another person should be prepared to present such evidence before the appropriate authorities or in a court of law.
‘Let The Evidence Be Produced’
Explaining why he decided to institute legal proceedings against Okonkwo, Obi referred to comments allegedly made by his former ally, who claimed he possessed undisclosed information about him and would reveal it if challenged or sued.
Obi said the lawsuit was intended to give Okonkwo the opportunity to present whatever evidence he claimed to have.

“Kenneth Okonkwo said he has so many hidden things about me, that if he’s provoked or sued he will bring them out, and that is why I am suing him, to bring those things out,” Obi stated.
He added that allegations of such magnitude should not remain in the realm of speculation.
“If someone claims to have damaging or hidden information about another person, such allegations should either be proven or withdrawn,” he said.
Obi maintained that his legal action is about accountability and due process, insisting that public accusations should be supported by verifiable facts rather than left hanging in the public space.
