If Nigerian politics were a reality TV show, then the relationship between Kenneth Okonkwo and Peter Obi would currently be somewhere between a messy breakup and a full-blown family meeting gone wrong.

What began as a political alliance during the 2023 elections has now turned into one of the most dramatic public feuds in opposition politics, with fresh allegations, legal threats, leaked chats, and enough social media fire to keep political observers entertained for weeks.
On Wednesday, former Labour Party stalwart and current ADC chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, escalated his battle with Peter Obi by releasing what he described as evidence to support his controversial bribery allegations against the former Anambra State governor.
And no, this wasn’t one of those vague “I have evidence but can’t show it” political statements Nigerians are accustomed to hearing every election season.
Okonkwo came armed with screenshots.
The ₦10 Million and ₦20 Million Controversy
The drama traces back to Okonkwo’s earlier claim that Peter Obi and certain political leaders in the South-East allegedly collected ₦10 million from House of Representatives aspirants and ₦20 million from senatorial aspirants during controversial party primary elections.
According to him, one of the affected aspirants, Obunike Ohaegbu, allegedly informed him about the payments and even presented documentary evidence.
The allegation immediately generated controversy and attracted a legal response from Obi’s camp, setting the stage for what is gradually becoming one of the most bitter political disputes involving former Labour Party allies.
But rather than retreat under the pressure of legal threats, Okonkwo appears to have doubled down.
“I Have The Chats”
In a post shared on his X account, Okonkwo released screenshots of what he claimed were conversations between himself and Ohaegbu.
According to him, when he demanded proof that Peter Obi personally approved the alleged payments, Ohaegbu told him that party officials had directly linked the payments to Obi and members of a caucus allegedly assembled by him.
Whether the chats ultimately prove the allegations is now a matter that may be tested in the court of law rather than the court of public opinion.
But politically, the move has already intensified an already ugly confrontation.

From Evidence to Insults
As if the bribery allegations were not enough, the conversation quickly shifted from politics to personal attacks.
Okonkwo accused some Obi supporters of monitoring his social media activities and claimed they had come to “spy” on his platform.
Then came the verbal fireworks.
The lawyer and politician launched a blistering attack on his former ally, accusing Obi of being intolerant of criticism and incapable of handling opposing views.
In typical Nigerian political fashion, what started as a disagreement over allegations soon transformed into a debate about democracy, free speech, leadership qualities, and who is more thin-skinned.
At one point, Okonkwo argued that if Obi could not tolerate criticism as a private citizen, it raised questions about how he would react if entrusted with state power.
Opposition Politics Gets Messier
For many observers, the most fascinating part of this unfolding drama is not necessarily the allegations themselves but what they reveal about the state of opposition politics in Nigeria.
Just a few years ago, Kenneth Okonkwo was one of Peter Obi’s loudest defenders.
Today, he has become one of his fiercest critics.

It is the kind of political transformation that reminds Nigerians of a familiar truth: in politics, today’s ally can become tomorrow’s most dangerous opponent.
Sometimes, former friends know where all the skeletons are buried.
The Bigger Picture
Beyond the social media exchanges, the leaked chats, and the heated rhetoric, the controversy raises larger questions about transparency in party primaries, accountability among political leaders, and the increasingly fractured nature of Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of future elections.
For now, Peter Obi’s camp continues to challenge the allegations through legal channels, while Kenneth Okonkwo appears determined to keep pressing his case in the public arena.
One thing is certain.
This political quarrel is far from over.
And if recent events are anything to go by, Nigerians may need more popcorn before the final chapter is written.
