When world leaders exchange letters, they rarely become headline material.
Most are diplomatic, carefully worded and quickly forgotten.
But this one was different.
In a message that is already stirring conversations about Nigeria’s growing security partnership with the United States, President Donald Trump did more than exchange diplomatic courtesies with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He offered praise.
He offered support.
And perhaps most significantly, he declared that standing with Tinubu in the fight against terrorism was “a true honour.”
The letter, dated July 6, 2026, was made public by the Presidency on Wednesday through Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
At a time when Nigeria continues to battle terrorism, banditry and violent extremism across several parts of the country, Trump’s message appeared designed to send a strong signal—not only to Abuja but also to the international community—that Washington intends to remain firmly behind Nigeria’s security efforts.
‘I Applaud Your Resolve’
Trump opened the letter by thanking Tinubu for his earlier correspondence before turning his attention to Nigeria’s security challenges.
Rather than speaking in broad diplomatic language, the American president directly commended Tinubu’s leadership.
“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote.
He then praised Tinubu’s determination to confront terrorism and insecurity, particularly attacks targeting Christian communities.
“I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities, and it is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.”
The remarks represent one of Trump’s strongest public endorsements of Tinubu’s security policies since both leaders began strengthening ties between their administrations.
A Partnership Built Around Security
Trump’s letter also painted a picture of a relationship that extends beyond diplomacy.
According to him, Nigeria and the United States are confronting a common enemy.
As extremist violence continues to threaten countries across West Africa, Trump argued that neither nation could afford to fight alone.
“The United States-Nigeria relationship is crucial at a time when conflict has spread across West Africa and around the world,” he said.
“We both share a mutual goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms.”
To demonstrate that commitment, Trump pointed to what he described as the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, saying it had created a stronger framework for military collaboration between both countries.
Elite US Troops Already Working With Nigeria
Trump also revealed that some of America’s most elite military personnel are already supporting Nigeria’s armed forces.
According to him, United States Special Operations Forces have been deployed to train Nigerian troops, improve intelligence gathering and strengthen operational capabilities against terrorist organisations.
“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces—among the most elite military units anywhere in the world—to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland,” Trump stated.
He added that the support was particularly aimed at protecting communities affected by terrorist violence.
Behind The Scenes Of A Growing Alliance
The Presidency said Trump’s letter reflects months of growing cooperation between Abuja and Washington.
According to the government, both countries recently established a Joint Working Group led by their respective National Security Advisers to coordinate military training, intelligence sharing and counterterrorism operations.
One example cited by the Presidency was a coordinated operation carried out on May 16 around the Lake Chad region.
The government said the operation resulted in the killing of a senior terrorist commander, Abubakar Al-Minoki, alongside several of his associates.
Although independent verification of the operation’s outcome has not been publicly released, Nigerian authorities described it as another significant step in degrading terrorist networks operating in the region.
Diplomacy Beyond The Battlefield
Security was not the only issue linking both countries.
The Presidency also disclosed that the United States Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, recently visited Abuja for high-level discussions with Nigerian officials.
Those talks reportedly focused on expanding cooperation not only in defence but also in other strategic areas of mutual interest.
Trump closed his letter by expressing optimism that both countries would continue working together throughout his presidency.

“I look forward to our continued discussions over the course of my Presidency,” he wrote.
More Than Just A Letter
Diplomatic letters often disappear into government archives.
This one probably won’t.
Beyond the formal greetings and diplomatic language, Trump’s message carries political, military and symbolic significance.
For Tinubu, it offers international backing at a time when insecurity remains one of the defining issues of his administration.
For Washington, it reinforces America’s intention to deepen its influence in West Africa through closer military cooperation with Africa’s most populous nation.
Whether the partnership ultimately translates into lasting improvements in Nigeria’s security landscape remains to be seen.
But for now, one message stands out above every other line in Trump’s letter:
“It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists.”
