The long wait is finally over for hundreds of anxious candidates across Nigeria after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced the release of 279 previously withheld UTME results.

But while some students are celebrating, others are still trapped in uncertainty as the examination body continues its sweeping investigation into alleged examination malpractice.
The latest development has once again placed Nigeria’s fragile examination system under intense public scrutiny.
Relief For Candidates After Weeks Of Anxiety
For many candidates, the past few weeks have been filled with panic, fear and sleepless nights.
Some students feared their university dreams had been destroyed after discovering their results were withheld shortly after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Parents grew frustrated.
Social media exploded with complaints.
Questions flooded online platforms as candidates demanded answers from JAMB.
Now, in what appears to be a major relief, the board says 279 affected candidates have been cleared after investigations found no direct evidence linking them to examination malpractice.
JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to him, the released results are part of the board’s ongoing review process aimed at separating innocent candidates from those genuinely involved in cheating or examination fraud.
JAMB Still Holding Back More Results
Despite the fresh release, JAMB made it clear that several other results remain under investigation.
The board revealed that some candidates had already lost their results after evidence confirmed their involvement in malpractice.
Benjamin explained that JAMB’s monitoring systems detected suspicious activities in certain examination centres during the UTME.
As a result, results linked to those centres are still being withheld pending the conclusion of investigations.
The board insisted that it would not hesitate to cancel any result where wrongdoing is established.
For many Nigerians, this raises a troubling question:
Is exam malpractice becoming more sophisticated than the systems designed to stop it?
Technology, Fear And The Battle For Credibility
Over the years, JAMB has repeatedly presented itself as one of Nigeria’s most technologically advanced examination bodies.
From biometric verification to live monitoring systems, the board has invested heavily in digital reforms aimed at reducing cheating.
Yet, every examination season still arrives with controversy.
This year has been no different.
While some Nigerians applaud JAMB for tightening its anti-malpractice measures, others argue that innocent candidates are sometimes caught in the middle of broad investigations targeting compromised centres.
For affected students, the emotional burden can be devastating.
University admissions are time-sensitive, and every delayed result creates fear, confusion and uncertainty about the future.
How Candidates Can Check Their Results
JAMB advised candidates who are yet to access their UTME results to follow the official checking process.
According to the board, candidates should send “UTMERESULT” to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number used during registration.
The board stressed that only candidates cleared of wrongdoing would eventually have their results released.
Tinubu Appoints New JAMB Registrar
Amid the controversy surrounding UTME results, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Segun Aina as the new Registrar of JAMB.
He is expected to replace Is-haq Oloyede when his tenure officially ends on July 31, 2026.
The appointment was confirmed by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu believes Aina possesses the expertise and technical experience needed to strengthen JAMB’s operations and improve on the achievements recorded under Oloyede’s leadership.
A New Era Or More Of The Same?
The appointment of a new registrar comes at a sensitive moment for Nigeria’s education sector.
JAMB has earned praise in recent years for increasing transparency and remittance generation.
However, concerns over examination malpractice, technical glitches and delayed result processing continue to haunt the system.

Now, many Nigerians are wondering whether the incoming leadership will finally solve these recurring problems or simply continue managing an already overstretched examination structure.
For students preparing for future UTME examinations, one thing is becoming painfully clear:
In Nigeria’s fiercely competitive education system, passing the exam may no longer be the only battle — surviving the system itself has become another test entirely.
