DHQ Clears Air On US Terrorism Claim, Says 199 Jihadists Were Eliminated In Earlier Nigeria-US Mission

When news surfaced that United States forces had helped eliminate 199 jihadists and recovered what American officials described as an unprecedented haul of ISIS equipment, many assumed Nigeria had just witnessed another major military offensive.

But according to Nigeria’s military, there was no fresh battlefield operation.

Instead, what caught global attention this week was the release of information that had been kept away from the public for months.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says the operation being celebrated by American officials was carried out in May 2026 during a joint counter-terrorism mission involving Nigerian and United States forces. While the operation itself had already been acknowledged by Nigerian authorities, several operational details remained classified until they were recently declassified by the US government.

Speaking on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, explained that recent reports should not be interpreted as evidence of a new military campaign.

According to him, the joint security partnership between both countries remains active, adding that the latest disclosures simply provided additional insight into an operation that had already taken place.

The clarification came after remarks by Sebastian Gorka, who described the mission as one of the most successful counter-terrorism operations undertaken by the current US administration.

Beyond The Killing

Beyond the reported killing of 199 jihadists, Gorka revealed that security forces recovered an enormous collection of weapons, ammunition and electronic devices from terrorist camps.

He disclosed that the volume of digital equipment seized during the raid was so extensive that an additional aircraft had to be deployed to transport the recovered materials.

According to him, the intelligence value of the equipment could prove even more significant than the battlefield success itself.

Security analysts are expected to examine the recovered devices to uncover communication networks, operational methods and other intelligence that could help disrupt ISIS activities beyond Nigeria’s borders.

Gorka maintained that extremist organisations continue to exploit poorly governed territories across Africa to rebuild their operations, making sustained international cooperation increasingly important.

Strengthened Collaboration

The strengthened collaboration between Abuja and Washington dates back to November 2025, when Nuhu Ribadu visited the United States for high-level security discussions.

That engagement eventually led to the establishment of a Joint Working Group on Security, providing a framework for intelligence sharing and coordinated operations targeting terrorist hideouts, particularly in Nigeria’s North-East.

For Nigerian military authorities, the latest attention surrounding the operation serves less as the announcement of a new victory and more as confirmation of an evolving security partnership that continues to shape the country’s counter-terrorism strategy.
