A major leadership twist has emerged within the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as the group reportedly suspended the office of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, alongside the position of Director of Radio Biafra, in what appears to be one of its most significant internal restructurings in years.

The decision, according to a statement issued on Thursday, June 19, 2026, followed a full-house meeting of IPOB’s Directorate held on Wednesday and signed by the Head of the Directorate of State, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem.
A New Power Centre Emerges
At the heart of the announcement is a sweeping claim: that the Directorate of State (DOS) will now take full charge of the movement’s affairs.
The group stated that IPOB was founded by Biafrans in the diaspora and not built around any single individual, insisting that leadership authority does not rest solely with one person.
It further maintained that no individual has the power to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the organisation’s highest decision-making body.
Tension Over Prison Communications
The shake-up reportedly followed a review of intelligence concerning communications attributed to Kanu from the Sokoto custodial facility.
IPOB claimed that certain messages allegedly originating from prison had triggered confusion within its ranks and, in some cases, led to arrests and deaths of members in the region.
The group also alleged that movements around Kanu, including his visitors, were being monitored by the Department of State Services (DSS), raising further concerns within the organisation.
Fear of Escalation and Internal Control
In its statement, IPOB warned against what it described as attempts by certain individuals to form breakaway armed groups, cautioning that such actions could fuel renewed violence in the South-East.
The organisation said the restructuring was necessary to prevent “reckless actions and unguarded utterances” that could lead to further arrests and loss of lives.
It stressed that going forward, it would not take responsibility for actions carried out by individuals who are no longer recognised as part of its active leadership structure.
Kanu’s Reported Counter-Move
Meanwhile, the development comes amid reports that Nnamdi Kanu himself had recently dissolved the third Directorate of State administration and inaugurated a new leadership structure, appointing a US-based associate, Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ, as the new head of DOS.

That move, according to earlier statements attributed to IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, placed the new appointee in charge of coordination and daily operations of the movement.
A Movement in Transition
The Directorate of State, created in 2012 as IPOB’s administrative backbone, has over the years been headed by different figures across Europe and the United States, reflecting the movement’s global diaspora structure.
With fresh claims of suspension, counter-appointments, and competing authority lines, IPOB now appears to be entering a new and uncertain phase of internal realignment — one that could reshape its leadership structure going forward.
