The political chessboard ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election has gained another major piece, with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) drawing a clear line around the party’s campaign structure.
The governors have resolved that they will not back any political alliance, coalition or parallel structure that could weaken the APC or threaten President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
The position, announced after a high-level meeting of the APC governors in Abuja on Monday night, places the governors firmly behind candidates flying the ruling party’s flag and signals growing concern within the APC over competing political arrangements ahead of the election.
The meeting was held at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge and was chaired by Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.
Reading the communique at the end of the meeting, Uzodimma said the governors had agreed to keep their political support within the APC structure and would not endorse candidates outside the party.
Governors reject divided loyalty
At the heart of the governors’ decision is a concern that multiple political structures could create competing centres of loyalty within the ruling party and ultimately affect its candidates at the polls.
Uzodimma said the forum had therefore resolved not to participate in any arrangement capable of undermining Tinubu’s re-election campaign or damaging the electoral fortunes of APC candidates.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” he said.
The Imo governor made it clear that the commitment extends beyond the presidential election to candidates contesting legislative and governorship positions under the APC platform.
“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party,” he added.
The Wike factor
The governors’ declaration comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the APC, as political realignments continue to take shape ahead of 2027.
One of the most closely watched developments is the Rainbow Coalition, associated with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike has repeatedly argued that the coalition is designed to help secure Tinubu’s re-election rather than work against the President.
But within the APC, the emergence of political structures operating outside the party’s direct control has raised questions about whether such arrangements could eventually create competing candidates and campaign structures.
That concern appears to be behind the governors’ insistence that their support will remain exclusively within the APC.
‘Our campaign commitment is exclusively to APC candidates’
For the governors, the issue is not simply about whether other political actors support Tinubu.
It is also about who controls the machinery through which that support is delivered.
Uzodimma said the APC governors would align their campaign activities with the President and the strategic objectives of the ruling party.
“The governors’ campaign commitment is exclusively to all APC candidates. All levels of the party campaign architecture will align with the expectations of Mr President and the strategic objectives of the party,” he said.
The statement effectively draws a boundary between supporting Tinubu’s re-election as an individual political project and supporting the APC’s candidates and structures as a party-wide campaign.
A warning as 2027 alliances take shape
The governors’ resolution adds another layer to the increasingly complicated opposition and coalition politics unfolding ahead of the 2027 elections.

Across Nigeria’s political landscape, politicians are exploring new alliances, switching platforms and considering how best to position themselves for the next electoral contest.
For the APC governors, however, the message from Abuja is straightforward: the party’s candidates must remain the centre of its campaign effort.
Whether that position will ease concerns within the ruling party or trigger further debate over the role of political coalitions remains to be seen.
For now, the governors have chosen their side of the political chessboard — and they have made it clear that when the 2027 campaign begins in earnest, they intend to play under the APC banner.
