For a state that has been called “God’s Own State,” the political journey of Abia has been anything but uneventful.
Since its creation in 1991, Abia State has witnessed military rule, brief democratic experiments, political realignments and, eventually, an uninterrupted return to civilian government.
Over the years, different personalities have occupied the Government House, Umuahia, leaving behind different political legacies and shaping the direction of the state in their own ways.
Abia was created on August 27, 1991, by the military administration of former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, after it was carved out of the old Imo State.
Air Vice Marshal Frank Ajobena became the first military administrator. But when Nigeria briefly returned to democracy in 1992, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu made history as the first democratically elected governor of the new state.
Since then, only five politicians have been elected governor of Abia: Ogbonnaya Onu, Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Orji, Okezie Ikpeazu and the incumbent, Alex Otti.
Here is a look at the men who have occupied the office since Abia’s democratic journey began.
1. Ogbonnaya Onu — January 1992 to November 1993
Before Abia had a long democratic history, it had Ogbonnaya Onu.
Onu became the first democratically elected governor of Abia after winning the 1991 governorship election on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC).
He was sworn in in January 1992, becoming the first civilian governor of the newly created state.
But his administration was caught in the uncertainty that surrounded Nigeria’s Third Republic.
The democratic experiment did not last long.
In November 1993, the military once again took control of the country, bringing the short-lived civilian administration to an abrupt end.
Onu’s time in office therefore lasted less than two years.
His political career, however, was far from over. He went on to become a prominent national figure and later served as Minister of Science and Technology under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He died in April 2024.
2. Orji Uzor Kalu — May 1999 to May 2007
If Onu opened Abia’s democratic chapter, Orji Uzor Kalu began its more enduring Fourth Republic era.
When Nigeria returned to uninterrupted democratic rule in 1999, Kalu won the Abia governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He was sworn in on May 29, 1999.
Four years later, he secured re-election, giving him eight years in office.
Kalu’s political journey was also marked by a change of party allegiance. Towards the end of his tenure, he left the PDP and became associated with the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).
Leaving Government House did not mean leaving politics.
Kalu later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and became a senator representing Abia North Senatorial District.
His eight-year administration remains one of the defining periods in Abia’s post-1999 political history.
3. Theodore Orji — May 2007 to May 2015
In 2007, the political baton moved to Theodore Ahamefule Orji.
Orji won the governorship election on the platform of the Progressive Peoples Alliance and succeeded Kalu as governor on May 29, 2007.
But his political journey was not without a major party switch.
After beginning his administration under the PPA, Orji eventually joined the PDP.
He later contested the 2011 governorship election under the PDP banner and won a second term.
That victory kept him in office for another four years.
By the time he left Government House on May 29, 2015, Orji had completed the constitutionally allowed two terms.
His political career continued beyond the state executive office. He subsequently moved to the National Assembly, where he represented Abia Central Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023.
4. Okezie Ikpeazu — May 2015 to May 2023
The next chapter belonged to Okezie Ikpeazu, whose victory ensured that the PDP’s grip on Abia remained intact.
Ikpeazu won the 2015 governorship election on the PDP platform and was sworn in on May 29 of that year.
But his emergence was immediately followed by a fierce legal battle.
His major challenger, Alex Otti, who contested on the APGA platform, challenged the election result.
The dispute travelled through the courts and eventually reached the Supreme Court, which affirmed Ikpeazu’s election.
In 2019, Ikpeazu returned to the polls seeking a second term.
He won the election with 261,127 votes, according to official INEC results, defeating APC candidate Uche Ogah, who scored 99,574 votes, while Alex Otti of APGA polled 64,366 votes.
Ikpeazu therefore remained governor for another four years.
When he left office on May 29, 2023, he had completed eight years in Government House.
But his departure marked more than the end of an administration.
It also brought an end to the PDP’s uninterrupted control of the Abia governorship in the Fourth Republic.
5. Alex Otti — May 2023 to date
Then came the man who had tried twice before.
Alex Otti had contested the Abia governorship in 2015 and 2019 without success.
In 2023, he returned for a third attempt, this time under the Labour Party.
And this time, he won.
Otti secured 175,467 votes in the March 18, 2023 governorship election, defeating PDP candidate Okey Ahiwe, who polled 88,529 votes. Young Progressives Party candidate Enyinnaya Nwafor finished third with 28,972 votes.

He was sworn in on May 29, 2023.
For Abia’s political history, the result was significant.
Otti’s victory ended the PDP’s long-standing hold on the governorship and ushered in a new political era under the Labour Party.
A former banking executive, Otti brought a different professional background to the office, having spent years in the financial sector before venturing deeper into politics.
His emergence also gave a dramatic conclusion to a political journey that had seen him contest the same office twice before finally breaking through on his third attempt.
The political journey continues
From Ogbonnaya Onu’s brief Third Republic administration to Orji Uzor Kalu’s eight-year tenure, Theodore Orji’s two terms, Okezie Ikpeazu’s eight years and Alex Otti’s historic 2023 victory, Abia’s democratic story has passed through several political eras.
The state has experienced party switches, legal battles, electoral contests and changes in political direction.
But one thing has remained constant: the office of governor has continued to sit at the centre of Abia’s political story.
And with Otti currently occupying Government House, the next chapter of “God’s Own State” is still being written.
