The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday, June 27, with late twists across the final round of matches confirming the 32 teams that will battle for a place in the Round of 16.
One of the biggest moments of the tournament so far came in the thrilling Group J encounter between Algeria and Austria.
Algeria looked set to secure all three points after Riyad Mahrez put his side ahead deep into stoppage time. However, substitute Saša Kalajdžić struck with virtually the final kick of the game to earn Austria a dramatic 3-3 draw, a result that saw both teams qualify for the knockout stage while Iran crashed out of the competition.
Co-host Mexico finished the group phase with a perfect record, ending Group A with nine points after defeating South Korea and Czechia to book their place in the Round of 32.
Fellow co-hosts Canada and the United States also advanced to the knockout stage. Canada progressed despite a narrow defeat to Switzerland, while the United States qualified after topping their group.
