With just days to the Osun State governorship election, the Nigeria Police Force has unveiled one of its most aggressive election security operations in recent years—deploying about 15,000 officers, warning politicians to stay within the law, and revealing that anyone arrested for serious electoral offences will be transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for investigation and prosecution.
The message is unmistakable: Osun will not be business as usual.
As political campaigns reach fever pitch and tensions continue to build across the state, security authorities say they are determined to prevent violence, vote buying, ballot box snatching and every other form of electoral malpractice that has tainted previous elections.
Police Draw the Battle Line Ahead of Osun Poll
The sweeping security blueprint was unveiled on Wednesday in Osogbo by the Commissioner of Police in charge of election security, Samuel Erale Etaifo, during a strategic meeting with journalists and Divisional Police Officers.
Meanwhile, according to Etaifo, the operation is not an ordinary policing assignment but a coordinated national security mission involving Commissioners of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General, the Police Mobile Force, tactical squads and other specialised units.
The objective, he said, is straightforward: ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot without fear before, during and after the August 15 governorship election.
The police insist that protecting lives and preserving the credibility of the electoral process remain their highest priorities.
Why Election Offenders Could End Up In Abuja
Perhaps the biggest announcement from the security briefing was the decision to relocate suspects involved in major electoral crimes out of Osun State.
Rather than allowing sensitive investigations to remain within the state, the police disclosed that individuals arrested for serious election-related offences would be moved to Abuja for investigation and prosecution.
However, the decision appears designed to shield investigations from political interference, local influence and attempts to manipulate judicial processes.
By taking suspects outside the state immediately after arrest, security authorities believe they can strengthen accountability while sending a powerful warning to political actors contemplating electoral misconduct.
Vote Buyers, Ballot Snatchers And Intimidators Put On Notice
The Police made it clear that no category of offender would receive special treatment.
According to the security command, offences such as:
- Vote buying
- Ballot box snatching
- Voter intimidation
- Election violence
- Disruption of voting
- Any form of electoral malpractice
will attract immediate law enforcement action.
The warning was not directed only at politicians.
Security personnel themselves, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), party agents and every stakeholder participating in the election were reminded that violating electoral laws would carry serious consequences.
Police Promise Neutrality As Political Temperature Rises
Election periods in Nigeria often generate accusations of security bias, but Etaifo sought to reassure political parties that the Police would remain professionally neutral throughout the exercise.
He pledged that every political party and every governorship candidate would enjoy equal protection under the law.
According to him, security agencies have no preferred candidate and will not tolerate intimidation, harassment or interference from any political camp.
For voters already anxious about election day, the assurance is intended to build confidence that law enforcement will focus solely on maintaining peace rather than influencing outcomes.
Governor Briefed As Massive Deployment Begins
As preparations intensified, Etaifo disclosed that he had already met with Governor Ademola Adeleke to explain the comprehensive security strategy.
The early deployment of thousands of officers, he explained, is deliberate.
Rather than waiting until election day, security personnel are being positioned across the state ahead of time to reassure residents, discourage criminal activities and reduce pre-election tension.
The expectation is that visible security presence will encourage greater voter participation by making citizens feel safer at polling centres.
Warning To Police Officers: Compromise Will Not Be Tolerated
The Police Commissioner also turned his attention inward.
Officers assigned to election duties were instructed to discharge their responsibilities professionally and resist any attempt by politicians to compromise them.

He warned that any officer found collaborating with political actors or engaging in misconduct would face disciplinary sanctions.
