The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has condemned what it described as a grave violation of palace protocol following the unauthorised visit of social media personality Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, to the Oba of Benin’s palace.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the council’s Secretary, Frank Irabor, the incident, which occurred on March 6, 2026, was characterised as a desecration of one of the most sacred cultural institutions in the Benin Kingdom.
According to the council, Peller and members of his entourage gained entry into the palace without proper approval and engaged in activities that disrupted the peace and dignity of the environment.
The BTC stressed that the palace is not a public space for casual visits or content creation, but a revered traditional seat governed by long-standing customs and spiritual significance.
Following a preliminary investigation, the council disclosed that disciplinary actions have already been taken against individuals within the palace who facilitated the breach.
A chief linked to the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a council staff member, identified as Omuemu, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for his role in enabling the unauthorised access.
Queen Faces Disciplinary Action
The council also revealed that a queen who appeared in the controversial visit is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which could ultimately lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin customs.
Additionally, Peller has been summoned to appear before a committee of chiefs set up to investigate the matter and present his account.
However, the council noted that he has yet to respond to the invitation.
The BTC has now publicly demanded his immediate appearance before the committee, along with a formal written apology for the incident.
It warned that failure to comply could result in legal action, adding that law enforcement agencies have already been alerted.
