The UK Home Office has unveiled a comprehensive increase in visa, residency, and citizenship fees, with the new charges scheduled to take effect from April 8, 2026.

The changes will impact thousands of foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, who make up a significant share of applicants seeking to visit, study, work, or settle in the United Kingdom each year.
With demand for UK migration opportunities still strong, the revised fees introduce an additional financial hurdle for prospective applicants across nearly all visa categories.
Widespread Fee Adjustments
The updated pricing structure affects both overseas and in-country applications.
From short-term visit visas to permanent residency and citizenship processes, most categories have seen upward revisions.
For instance, the cost of a standard visitor visa for up to six months will increase modestly, while student and work visa applicants will face higher charges across multiple routes.
Settlement and citizenship applications—already among the most expensive—have also been revised upward, further raising the overall cost of long-term migration.
Notable Exception
Amid the general increases, one category stands out. The fee for registering a child as a British citizen has been reduced, offering some relief to families.
This makes it the only major category to see a price drop in the new schedule.

What This Means
For many Nigerians planning to relocate to the UK, the new fee structure represents a significant rise in overall migration costs.
With increases affecting nearly every stage—from visa application to permanent residency—individuals and families may need to budget more carefully or reassess their plans.

Despite the higher costs, the UK is expected to remain a top destination for education, employment, and long-term settlement.
However, the financial barrier to entry has clearly been raised.
