A leadership transition has taken place at Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as Prof. Mahmood Yakubu formally handed over authority to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as the Acting Chairman of the Commission.

The handover ceremony reportedly took place at INEC headquarters in Abuja, marking the end of Yakubu’s tenure and the beginning of a new chapter for Nigeria’s top electoral body.
May Agbamuche-Mbu, previously one of INEC’s National Commissioners representing Delta State, is expected to oversee the commission’s operations until a new substantive chairman is appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Yakubu, who has served as chairman since 2015, thanked INEC staff and Nigerians for their support, emphasizing the importance of institutional continuity and electoral integrity.
In her remarks, Agbamuche-Mbu pledged to uphold transparency and independence, assuring that ongoing electoral reforms and preparations for the 2027 general elections will continue without disruption.
The development has drawn attention across political circles, with observers watching closely to see how the new leadership will navigate upcoming off-cycle elections and ongoing electoral litigations.
