Nollywood star Toyin Abraham has addressed the backlash that followed a viral clip showing her kneeling to greet businesswoman Shade Okoya, her husband Alhaji Rasaq Okoya, and other dignitaries at a high-profile event.

The video, which surfaced online after the 70th birthday celebration of former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, sparked mixed reactions across social media. While some praised her show of respect, others questioned the necessity of the gesture.
One social media user, identified as Lady Victoria, criticized the actress, suggesting that her repeated kneeling in public settings was excessive and appeared performative.
The comment, which gained traction online, urged Toyin to reconsider the habit.
Responding to the criticism, Toyin Abraham stood her ground, making it clear that she has no intention of changing her behavior.
She emphasised that kneeling is a deliberate act of respect she reserves for individuals she believes deserve it, regardless of their social standing.
In a follow-up message, the actress reflected more deeply on the reactions her actions had generated.
She expressed concern over what she described as a gradual shift away from traditional values, noting that gestures like kneeling—once widely accepted as a sign of respect—are now being questioned.
Toyin further explained that she was raised in a culture where kneeling to greet elders is a fundamental value, and she remains committed to upholding that tradition.
According to her, the practice is not about status or public approval, but about honoring her upbringing and cultural identity.
She also highlighted her intention to pass these values on to younger generations, stressing the importance of preserving cultural heritage in a rapidly changing society.
