Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III has officially declared the start of the 2026 Ramadan fast in Nigeria following the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon.
The announcement was delivered on his behalf by Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, who conveyed the decision of the Sultanate Council after receiving and verifying reports from different parts of the country.
According to the statement, credible moon sighting reports were submitted from various locations nationwide.
These reports were thoroughly examined, authenticated, and subsequently approved by the council, paving the way for the commencement of the holy month.
“With the successful verification of the new moon sightings across the country, the Sultanate Council has confirmed Wednesday, 18th February 2026, as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH,” the announcement stated.

The declaration marks the beginning of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for Muslims across Nigeria.
