Bashir Ahmad, who previously served as special assistant on digital communications to Muhammadu Buhari, has revealed that the late president’s son, Yusuf Buhari, is preparing to enter elective politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Ahmad, Yusuf has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, targeting the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter dated April 3 and reportedly signed by Yusuf, he expressed enthusiasm about joining the race, stating his desire to promote effective leadership and deliver development to his constituency.
Ahmad later confirmed the move publicly on his 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, noting that the decision came after extensive consultations with political stakeholders.
Politics From A Distance
Yusuf Buhari has largely stayed out of the public and political spotlight since his father left office, making this declaration his most significant political step so far.
Meanwhile, party stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area of Katsina State have already begun rallying support for his candidacy.
During a high-level meeting held at the local government secretariat, party leaders, elected officials, and appointees reportedly endorsed Yusuf as their preferred candidate for the federal constituency seat.
The council chairman, Usman Na Lado, described the endorsement as a unified decision aimed at boosting the APC’s electoral prospects in the area.
He said Yusuf’s perceived capacity and acceptance among party members influenced the choice.
The meeting also extended support to Bola Tinubu and Governor Dikko Umar Radda as the APC’s likely candidates for the presidency and governorship, respectively, in 2027.
The Endorsement
Additionally, the Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Nasiru Yahaya Daura, was endorsed for the Daura Senatorial seat.
Na Lado emphasised that these early endorsements reflect strategic preparations for the next general elections and called on party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation.
However, sources within the party have suggested that Yusuf Buhari’s emergence may not be entirely organic.

According to sources, the endorsement is believed to align with the preference of the state governor, indicating that Yusuf could be the administration’s favored candidate.
