The Royal Family is set to usher in it’s first gay marriage, with Lord Ivar Mountbatten, Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin, who will be marrying his partner James Coyle in the summer.
The 55-year-old father of three came out as gay in 2016 and will be marrying Coyle in a private chapel on his country estate in Devon.
Lord Mountbatten’s ex-wife, who divorced him eight years ago, will play a part in the ceremony and walk him down the aisle.
Penny, who has three daughters with the Lord, told the Daily Mail that it was her daughters who suggested it.
It was the girls’ idea. It makes me feel quite emotional. I’m very touched.
Speaking to the Mail, Lord Mountbatten said though his royal relatives can’t make the wedding, they are nevertheless ‘excited’ about the upcoming nuptials.
Sadly they can’t come to the wedding. Their diaries are arranged months in advance and they’re not around, but they adore James. Everyone adores him.
The ceremony will be small and intimate, with the Lord’s close friends and family in attendance.
Lord Mountbatten said: For me, what’s interesting is I don’t need to get married because I’ve been there, done that and have my wonderful children; but I’m pushing it because I think it’s important for him. James hasn’t had the stable life I have. I want to be able to give you that.
