Rev. Father Cyriacus Onunkwo a Catholic clergy, who was kidnapped in Imo State Eastern Nigerian has been found dead in the bush.
According to the Imo state police command, Father Cyriacus Onunkwo was allegedly snatched from his vehicle in Orlu town, Orlu Local Government Area on Friday morning by gunmen.
Imo state Police Commissioner, Chris Ezike, report that following a manhunt, the body was discovered in the bush in Omuma Village, Orlu East Local Government Area on Saturday.
Priests of Orlu Catholic Diocese were called in, and they identified the corpse.
Investigations are on to unveil his killers.
According to the Imo police boss:
“Although we are working on all leads over the matter. For now, it is a clear case of abduction and murder. If it was a case of kidnapping, his captives would have put a call across to anybody close to their victim and made a demand”, Ezike said.
Police say the late cleric’s car was discovered intact, with nothing removed from it. Neither did the body bear any gunshot or stab wounds, leading to speculations that he may have been strangled.
No arrests have so far been made, but CP Ezike says that the police are still working to find the abductors of the priest.
It could be recalled that Father Okonkwo came back from abroad to bury his late father only to meet his untimely death.
The father’s body is still lying in the mortuary.
