Reps Launch Probe into $460m Chinese Loan for Abuja CCTV Project

The House of Representatives on Wednesday began an investigation into the $460 million Chinese loan obtained by the Goodluck Jonathan administration for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The loan, which was meant to enhance security surveillance in Abuja, has faced intense scrutiny amid concerns that the CCTV project remains largely non-functional more than a decade later.

Lawmakers expressed displeasure over the lack of tangible results despite the massive funds involved, questioning both the contract process and the implementation of the project.

The probe aims to uncover how the funds were utilized, identify responsible parties, and determine whether Nigeria is still servicing the loan despite the absence of functioning CCTV infrastructure.

Security experts and civil society organizations have long criticized the project as a failed venture, describing it as one of Nigeria’s most expensive security technology disappointments.

The House Committee on Public Accounts is expected to summon key officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the Chinese contractor, ZTE Corporation, for explanations.
