The Ogun State Police Command has shot dead a suspected highway robber in the early hours of Sunday, while some alleged members of the gang escaped with gunshot wounds.
Police report indicated that the suspect was shot dead at Ososa junction along the Shagamu-Ore Expressway while the gang was allegedly robbing travellers.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the operatives of the Federal Special Armed Robbery Squad received a distress call that robbers had blocked the expressway at about 2.30am and were dispossessing people of their valuables.
Oyeyemi said, “On receiving the distress call, the officer in charge of FSARS, Uba Adam, led his men to the scene where the robbers reportedly engaged them in gun duel which lasted for about 45 minutes.
“At the end of the encounter, one of the robbers was shot dead, while others escaped with gunshot injuries.”
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said two locally made single-barrel guns and 78 live cartridges were recovered from them.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who commended his men for the prompt response to the distress call, appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals, to quickly inform the police if anybody with gunshot wounds approaches them for treatment.
