The Edo State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into a reported disruption at a political gathering in Benin City.
The incident came to light after Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, alleged that Peter Obi and several leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were attacked during an event on Tuesday.
Tanko, writing on X, claimed the disturbance occurred at the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun.
What The Police Has To Say
In a statement issued on Wednesday, police spokesperson Eno Ikodem explained that suspected hoodlums reportedly infiltrated the venue at about 2:55 p.m., shortly after the programme had concluded and most high-profile attendees had left.
According to the police, the intruders created panic, chased participants from the premises and overturned furniture set up for the event.
Patrol teams were dispatched following distress calls, but the suspects had fled before officers arrived.
Authorities confirmed that plastic chairs and canopies arranged outside the secretariat were damaged in the chaos.
While no fatalities were recorded, a woman sustained injuries during the stampede that followed the commotion.
Police said she received prompt treatment at a nearby pharmacy and was later discharged.
In a related development, officers also responded to reports of alleged gunfire near Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
Investigators observed signs of vandalism, including shattered rear windscreens and other damage to vehicles parked outside the compound.
Despite the destruction, no casualties were reported at the location.
Police Commissioner Orders Probe
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, has directed a full-scale probe into the incidents.
The command stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible, with a pledge to ensure they face prosecution.
Reaffirming its commitment to neutrality, the police assured political actors of adequate protection irrespective of party lines, stressing that violence linked to political activities will not be condoned.
Party leaders across the state have been invited to meet with the commissioner to discuss measures aimed at safeguarding future political engagements.

Meanwhile, residents have been encouraged to remain calm and cooperate with investigators by providing credible information that could aid the inquiry.
