The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has demanded firm and immediate action following the deadly attack in Plateau State, calling on authorities to ensure those behind the violence are swiftly brought to justice.
CAN President, Daniel Okoh, condemned the incident, describing it as both heartbreaking and intolerable.
He noted that Nigerians are increasingly frustrated by recurring violence and what he termed “routine statements” that fail to translate into meaningful outcomes.
In a statement released late Monday, Okoh voiced alarm over the growing pattern of attacks, highlighting the latest tragedy in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area.
According to him, citizens are no longer satisfied with words alone.
“Nigerians are exhausted from grieving. They want to see real action,” he said, insisting that those responsible must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted without delay.
Decisive Action
He warned that any failure to act decisively would reinforce fears that lives are no longer adequately protected.
The assault, which occurred on Sunday, reportedly left 28 people dead and several others injured.
The incident has triggered anger within the community, with residents staging protests in response to the killings.
CAN emphasised that the attack has severely shaken public confidence and called for a thorough investigation to prevent further bloodshed.
The group urged security agencies not only to react to such incidents but to adopt proactive strategies to stop them before they occur.
While acknowledging efforts by the Plateau State Government, Okoh cautioned that short-term interventions would not be enough to address the deeper security challenges.
“The people of Plateau—and Nigerians at large—deserve sustainable safety, not intermittent assurances,” he said.
Justice For The Victims
He also appealed to citizens to remain calm but alert, stressing the importance of justice for the victims and protection for those still at risk.
“We must ensure justice for those who have lost their lives, while safeguarding those who remain. Our future depends on building a country where no community lives in fear of sudden violence,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed the death toll at 28 during a statewide address, describing the tragedy as deeply distressing.
“This is a painful moment for our people. The loss of innocent lives weighs heavily on all of us,” he said.
Despite the setback, the governor reassured residents of the state’s resolve to confront insecurity, vowing to reinforce protective measures and maintain peace.
“We will not give in to fear. Plateau will stand united and stronger in the face of this challenge,” he stated, pledging to mobilise all available resources to defend lives, property, and the state’s territorial integrity.

Mutfwang also visited the affected area and those injured in the attack. In a bid to restore calm, the government has imposed a curfew on the community.
