The National Universities Commission (NUC) has begun formal steps to introduce Tiv and Nupe as full-fledged academic programmes in Nigerian universities.
According to the Commission, the move is part of ongoing efforts to preserve Nigeria’s indigenous languages, promote cultural identity, and expand research into under-represented ethnic groups. The new programmes will cover linguistics, literature, translation, and cultural studies linked to both languages.
The NUC says the introduction of Tiv and Nupe degrees aligns with global best practices, where nations integrate native languages into mainstream higher education to prevent extinction and ensure generational continuity.
Once fully approved, universities will be able to establish Departments of Tiv Studies and Departments of Nupe Studies, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
