NLC Announces Nationwide Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a nationwide protest scheduled for December 17, citing the worsening insecurity affecting communities across the country.

In a statement following an emergency National Executive Council meeting, the NLC expressed deep concern over the surge in kidnappings, banditry, terror attacks, and targeted violence that continue to threaten the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians. The union said the federal government has failed to take decisive action to protect citizens, especially workers who face growing risks in their workplaces, homes, and on major highways.

According to the Congress, the December 17 protest aims to send a strong message to authorities about the urgent need to strengthen national security, reform policing structures, and provide immediate relief for victims of violent attacks across different states.

The NLC also noted that insecurity has severely impacted the economy, disrupted food supply chains, increased transportation costs, and worsened poverty levels. The union stressed that it can no longer remain silent while Nigerians live in fear.

The Congress called on civil society groups, professional organizations, student bodies, and concerned citizens to join the peaceful demonstration, which will hold simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The statement added that the NLC remains committed to defending the rights, safety, and welfare of Nigerian workers and will continue to pressure the government until meaningful action is taken to restore peace and stability nationwide.
