Nigeria Police Leadership Changes: Hundeyin Removed After Disu Takes Over as IGP

According to reports, the decision was approved on Thursday, March 5, 2026, although officials have not yet disclosed the reason for the development.

The move comes in the wake of a leadership transition within the police hierarchy.

Tunji Disu Takes Charge

On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally inaugurated Tunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police following the removal of Kayode Egbetokun, who had held the position since 2023.

Sources within the police confirmed that Hundeyin’s removal was carried out earlier on Thursday as part of internal adjustments taking place under the new leadership.

A senior officer familiar with the development noted that such changes are typical whenever a new Inspector-General assumes office, as key positions are often reorganised to align with the new administration’s direction.

As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not announced a successor to take over the role of Force Public Relations Officer.

Hundeyin’s Appointment

Hundeyin was appointed to the position by former Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun.

The Lagos-born police officer hails from Badagry and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language from Lagos State University.

He later earned a Master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan.

Over the course of his career, Hundeyin has undergone specialised training in civil-military coordination at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Training Centre in Jaji, Kaduna State.

He previously served as the Police Public Relations Officer at the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos, and also participated in the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur in 2020.
