Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie has been rushed to hospital with a kidney infection.
The 81-year-old was taken to hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday.
Her family have released a statement and stressed she is expected to make a full recovery.
The statement said: “Prior to going to the clinic she was uncomfortable and complaining of loss of apetite and that one of her legs was painful.
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had to be admitted to hospital in October last year for a procedure on her knee.The activist and politician is still a member of the ANC’s National Executive Committee.
She was married to former South African President Nelson Mandela for 38 years, including the 27 years he served in jail.
The couple had separated two years before he became South Africa’s President in 1994.
Despite their divorce, and his second marriage in 1998, Winnie maintained close ties to her former husband.
