NCoS Explains Why Abba Kyari Has Not Been Released

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has clarified that suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, is still being held in its custody despite a recent court decision discharging him in one of the cases against him.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Samson Duza, made the clarification on Thursday while addressing journalists.

He explained that the court ruling only related to one of the charges filed against the embattled police officer and does not affect the other case currently pending before the court.

According to Duza, Kyari is facing two separate legal matters — one involving allegations of false asset declaration and another concerning a drug-related offence.

He stated that the court recently dismissed the charge bordering on alleged wrongful declaration of assets after the prosecution failed to present enough evidence to support the claim.

“The court discharged him in the case of wrongful declaration of assets due to insufficient evidence,” Duza said.

Duza added that the presiding judge described the case as weak, noting that the prosecution could not establish the allegations brought against the suspended officer.

However, he emphasised that Kyari remains in custody because the second case — which involves alleged drug-related offences — is still ongoing in court.

“The drug-related trial is still in progress. Until the court concludes proceedings on that matter, Kyari will continue to remain in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service,” he explained.
